Pizza – the yummiest thing on planet Earth

A delicious yet very simple meal – pizza

There is probably not many people out there who have never heard of pizza. Today it is among the most popular dishes in several countries, especially in the western world. But how can it be so amazingly popular as it is? After all, it is just a piece of bread with some sauce, topping, and (usually) cheese. Nothing fancy, right? So what’s the secret?

Well, its simplicity might be the explanation. The fact that it is so easy to make and the fact that it requires simple ingredients made it possible for a pizza to spread all around the world.

Italy, the motherland of this delicious type of bread

It all started in Italy, a Southern European land with the funny shape of a boot. Pizza actually has a history of thousands of years, but only a thousand years have passed by since the first time it was called “pizza”. It started its journey as plain bread, which became flattered and flatters through time, enriched with different types of toppings like onion and cheese. This kind of flatbread was made not only in Italy but also in Greece, the Balkans, Valencia, and Catalonia, but today’s pizza has the most things in common with the Italian version.

The evolution of pizza

From the beginning, it was treated as “poor people’s food” and was sold mainly on the street. The funny thing is that it still has a quite serious “food street status” even today, and can be bought relatively cheaply along with other kinds of street food.

However, these days there are many sophisticated recipes available with quality ingredients, and this makes pizza a suitable restaurant dish as well, even in gourmet restaurants. It can also be purchased frozen in countless supermarkets so that we can easily prepare it at home, even if we have no idea how to make it by a recipe book. Traditionally it is baked in the wood-fired brick oven, but it is, of course, possible to do it in a more simple one that most of us have at home.

What about our health?

Like most types of fast food, pizza is considered quite unhealthy, at least the way it is prepared by fast food places. It contains a high level of carbohydrates, fat, and salt and it contains almost no vitamins, trace elements, and other important nutrients. But this fact does not mean that you cannot enjoy a delicious slice of pizza every now and then, especially if you prepare it by yourself. If you want to be health-conscious, there are some tips and tricks for you about what to pay attention to when making pizza.

Homemade and healthy

First of all, replace white flour with some whole grain kind. The dough won’t be so light like it normally is, but this should not ruin your fun. Try to use homemade pizza sauce along with healthy toppings such as vegetables, and avoid things like ham, pepperoni (pepperoni pizza), bacon and so on.

How to choose the right wine

What do you know about wine?

If you are a real wine expert, this article will probably not be very informative for you. However, most people are not wine experts, therefore they will probably find some useful information in the followings. Even if you don’t drink alcohol or simply don’t like wine, you never know when you will have a wine-lover guest, either in your home or as a business partner. In this case, you will hopefully appreciate the time you have spent reading this.

The very basics

The most important and most simple wine rule is this: you should always choose red wine for red meat, and white wine for white meat. Red meats include pork, lamb, beef, veal, duck, deer and other game meats, while white meat comprises of chicken and turkey. Different kinds of fish can also be divided into these two categories: cod, flatfish or haddock are all white fish, and salmon, herring, sardines, mackerel and tuna are red ones.

More basic rules

Let’s go through some further basic rules about how to match wine with certain foods. Here are some pieces of good advice of how to select the right wine during the meal. First of all, it is better to start with white wine and finish with red one. The same applies to dry and sweet wines, too (so start with dry, and continue with sweet). With your dessert, drink a wine that is sweeter than the food itself.

Tips and tricks for pairing your wine with the right food

After going through the basics, we can get familiar with some more detailed rules to pair wine and food. Dry white wine is suitable for different kinds of vegetables (including roasted vegetables) and fish.

Sweet white wine is perfect for soft cheese, hard cheese, cured meat and various sweets. Rich white wine tastes good with soft cheese, fish, rich fish (like crabs) and white meat. Sparkling wines are suitable for soft cheese and hard cheese as well, vegetables, starches (for instance bread) and fish. If you drink light red wine, choose roasted vegetables, rich fish, white meat or cured meat with it.

For medium red wines you should eat roasted vegetables, hard cheese, bread and pastries, both white and red meat or cured meat. Bold red wines fit perfectly with hard cheese, starches, red meat and cured meat. Last but not least, we have to mention dessert wines too: apart from sweets, they are also a good match for soft cheese, starches and cured meats.

So which wine is which?

Let us give some examples of the wine categories mentioned above. Dry white wines include Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay or Muscadet. Sweet white wines include Riesling, Muscato, Vouvray. Rich white wines are for example Trimbach Pinot Blanc or Terlan Pinot Bianco. The most famous sparkling wine is definitely champagne. Light red wine is Pinot Noir for instance, medium red is Carignan and bold red wine is Dolcetto. Famous dessert wines include Sauternes or Tokaji Aszú.

How to eat in an Italian restaurant

Breakfast, lunch or dinner?

Just like at many other places in the world, there are three main courses in Italy as well, namely breakfast, lunch, and dinner. It is also quite common to eat a snack between meals, usually around afternoon. It is, of course, possible to enjoy any of these meals in a restaurant (or something similar): breakfast in a coffee shop on your way to work, lunch at a place close to your job and dinner in a nice, elegant restaurant downtown.

If you are lucky enough, you have at least one or two Italian places in your area, so you have the opportunity to eat like an Italian on a regular basis. You can read some tips and trick below about how to consume all the three main meals in an Italian way.

Breakfast

If you choose to have breakfast like Italians do, find a nice coffee shop first. These places are getting more and more popular these days, so it shouldn’t be too difficult to find one. Let’s start with the most important part of Italian breakfast: coffee. It can be a cappuccino, caffé latte or espresso (kids can drink hot chocolate). You will probably find the following foods on the menu: pastry (this is a must), biscuits, rolls, and bread. Apart from these basic things, you can often choose from cereal, muesli or fruit salad, too.

Chicken, pan seared with garlic and rosemary.
Angel hair pasta and Italian tomatoes.

Lunch

In Italian culture, this is the most important meal of the day. Many people have home cooked lunch at work from lunchboxes, or they simply go home to eat. However, there are many Italian restaurants that offer a lunch menu for those who prefer eating something different.

Traditionally there are three main parts of an Italian lunch. They start with a first course, which is very often pasta. Since there are over 500 different kinds of Italian pasta dishes available, we cannot give you the whole list. Don’t worry though, there will be a long list of them on the menu, and if you don’t know some of them, you can always ask your waiter.

The second course is considered the main course, and it is usually a meat or fish dish with vegetables. The last course is typically fruit, so we should maybe call it a half course. Although you can enjoy this traditional, two and a half course meal in most Italian restaurants, you have some other options as well. Pizza, the most famous Italian food is also a very popular choice for lunch. Just like in the case of pasta, you will probably find a long list of different kinds of it on the menu.

Dinner

If you want to follow Italian conventions, eat something light at the end of the day. Salads can be mentioned here, and different kinds of soups like Minestrone, the most well-known kind of all Italian soups. In addition to these, many restaurants offer a huge variety of Italian specialties for dinner, like lasagna, various pasta dishes, a huge pizza selection and some delicious desserts.

Let’s see what is on the menu for those who prefer a more conventional main course. Apart from pork and chicken, there is also veal, salmon, prawns, shrimp, tilapia, scallops, clams, mussels and calamari. As for side dish you can pick vegetables or pasta.

How to complete a great meal – desserts

If you still have some space in your stomach after an abundant lunch or dinner, you must try some of the desserts, made in Italian and American style. San Vito’s specialty is definitely the amazing chocolate souffle. Molten chocolate inside the cake, vanilla ice cream on the top – what more do we need?

Italian recipes that you can make the most of

The essence of Italian cuisine

What is the first thing that pops into your mind when you hear the following words: tomato, oregano, pasta, espresso, gelato, olive oil, pesto or prosciutto? Even if you are not so familiar with the world of cooking and the different kinds of cuisines, you probably know the answer: these ingredients are commonly used in Italian cuisine.

Moreover, you can probably mention at least four or five typical Italian dishes, such as pizza, pasta, lasagna, tiramisu or gelato. You can buy these meals in countless restaurants and supermarkets, but you can also prepare them in your own home. Not only are they cheaper this way, but they are often healthier as well, not to mention the fact that you can be proud of yourself if you can make some of these delicious meals yourself.

Are you inexperienced in the kitchen? Not a problem! We will introduce you two simple recipes, explaining step by step what you have to do in order to create some of the most popular Italian dishes

Pizza Margherita

Let’s start with everybody’s favorite, pizza! We have not met anyone who did not like it, so this recipe will probably be useful for everybody. We have chosen the most simple kind available: pizza Margherita. It is very easy to prepare, has a delicious taste and the best is that it can be developed further and can be used as a basic recipe for other kinds of pizza, too.

  • First, you can start preparing the dough.
  • Mix together 10 ounces flour with 5 ml instant yeast and 5 ml salt.
  • Mix in one small cup water and 15 ml olive oil, and when it is kneaded perfectly, put it aside.
  • Now you have time to make the sauce.
  • Stir together passata (strained tomato), basil and crushed garlic, and pour it to the top of the dough (roll it until it is very thin first).
  • Place the topping on the sauce: sliced tomato and mozzarella, plus some grated parmesan.
  • Bake the pizza in a preheated oven (around 230 °C) for 8-10 minutes.

Lasagna

If pizza is the favorite, then lasagna must be a close second due to its very typical Italian flavor. We have chosen a rich recipe that is still quite easy to make, although it takes more time than pizza.

  • You can start with cooking the sauce.
  • Take half kilogram sausage, 375-gram ground beef, 110 gram chopped the onion and some crushed garlic, and cook them until the meat turns brown.
  • Blend in 840 gram crushed tomato, 170-gram tomato paste, 170-gram tomato sauce and 118-ml water.
  • Add some spices like salt, pepper, basil, fennel, parsley and Italian spice mix. Cook it on low temperature for about one and half hours.
  • Cook lasagna noodles according to the instructions on the box and prepare the other sauce of 450-gram ricotta, one egg, salt, and parsley.
  • Layer the ingredients in a baking dish: meat sauce, noodles, and ricotta sauce cover the top with mozzarella and bake it for 25 minutes (190°C).

10 Italian dishes you must try before you die

A delicious kind of cuisine – Italian

There are probably not many people out there who have not tried at least one or two Italian dishes in their lives. Without further ado, here is a list of 10 great meals from Italy you must try at least once in your life.

Lasagna

Flat pasta, tomato sauce, béchamel sauce, minced meet (or vegetables) and lots of cheese – these layers will result in one of the best pasta dishes on the planet, lasagna.

Pizza

Similarly to lasagna, pizza is something very simple yet special. Bread, tomato sauce, various toppings (the list would be endless) and cheese – that is all you need for it.

Pasta – spaghetti, ravioli and so on

It would be impossible to go into details here, since there are hundreds of different pasta dishes available. However, we can mention some of the most well-known kinds apart from lasagna, such as spaghetti, tortellini, tagliatelle, ravioli, rigatoni, penne, orecchiette, macaroni, gnocchi, farfalle, fusilli and canelloni.

Minestrone

Minestrone is the most popular Italian soup, consisting mainly of vegetables, but it can also contain pasta, rice or meat. The trick is that it should always be made of seasonal vegetables, and for this reason it can be prepared according to different types of recipes.

Focaccia bread

Similarly to pizza, focaccia consists of bread, toppings like onion, meat, vegetables and cheese. The main difference between the two is that pizza has a much thinner bread than focaccia. Moreover, for focaccia we usually use only one kind of topping by itself, while in the case of pizza we often use many of them togehter.

Risotto

In order to make risotto, you will need to cook the rice in some liquid (cooked from vegetables or meet) until it is creamy. It can be prepared using various ingredients, including mushroom, beef, saffron, wine, beans, peas, pancetta, pumpkin, sausage and many different types of cheese.

Arancini

A perfect way to use the leftover from risotto is to make arancini. It is a kind of deep fried rice ball, stuffed with some ragu, peas and mozzarella. It can be eaten by itself or together with vegetables.

Espresso

Espresso is an extraordinary item on this list. Since it is a kind of coffee, it may not be considered as a dish, however, due to its popularity we have decided to include it anyway. It is an extremely strong kind of coffee, thanks to its method of preparation, which results in a high concentration of chemicals (including caffeine).

Panna cotta

A kind of cooked cream fixed with gelatin and with flavors like vanilla, coffee, rum and so on. It can be served by itself or with fruits, chocolate or caramel sauce or some liqueur. Basically, it is very similar to pudding but it is thicker.

Tiramisu

One of the most perfect desserts in the world is tiramisu, which is probably the most famous one of Italian sweets. It can only be perfect if made with Italian coffee.

How to order Italian like a pro

Original Italian food in an Italian restaurant

Do you know anyone who has never eaten anything Italian? Probably not, right? Everyone has tasted pizza, lasagna or some pasta dish at least once in their lives. On the other hand, this might not be the case if you ask people if they have been to an Italian restaurant. Italian cuisine is so incredibly widespread that its dishes can be bought basically anywhere in the western world.

However, if you want to know what it is like to eat something genuinely Italian, you should reserve a table in an Italian restaurant. An even better option is to travel directly to Italy and eat with the locals, but this choice is considerably more expensive. If you cannot afford a trip to the homeland of gelato, espresso, and tiramisu, don’t become disappointed; we are going to give you some useful tips so that you can enjoy a great meal in an Italian restaurant without being worried about embarrassing yourself in front of everyone. Let’s go through a typical Italian dinner step by step!

Aperitivo

Aperitivo can be translated as an appetizer, and as you might have found out already, it is the opening course. It would be a good idea not to eat too much here since this is only the beginning of the fun. A usual aperitif can be olives, cheese, nuts or small quiches. The ideal drink with it is wine or champagne.

Antipasto

Antipasto is another kind of appetizer, usually cold and heavier than aperitive. It can be prosciutto, bruschetta, some vegetable or cold salmon.

Primo

This is the first course of the meal, and it is generally without meat. It is typically risotto, soup, pasta or lasagna.

Secondo

Secondo is often the main course, the most important part of the meal. It can consist several kinds of fish and meat, for instance, salmon, cod, lobster, chicken, turkey, lamb, pork, beef and so on.

Contorno

Contorno is the garnish (usually made of vegetables) eaten together with the main course (secondo).

Insalata

In general, Insalata is served together with the meat (main course) if the side dish was pasta, potato or rice (so not fresh vegetable).

Formaggi e Frutta

As for the cheese course, something typically local will be served (in this case it will probably be something from the region the restaurant owner comes from). Along with cheese, seasonal fruits are also served.

Dolce

The most well known Italian desserts are tiramisu and gelato. If you cannot find them on the menu, you are probably at the wrong place. You can, of course, try something less famous, like pannacotta, rum baba, mostarda or cassata.

Caffé

Although there are many different types of Italian coffee life cappuccino and caffé latte, a strong espresso is the one that is consumed after meals.

Digestivo

Digestive is the last part of the Italian meal, and it is some kind of drink made of herbs or fruits, like limoncello.

Electric smoker – the revolutionary change in BBQ

Barbecuing, BBQ, grilling and so on – what is what?

Those who are not so familiar with the world of cooking are probably wondering what the terms mentioned above mean. Most of us know that they refer to cooking outside, but that is all; many of us do not know what kind of things are behind these three letters: BBQ. Does this word cover some type of activity, a kitchen appliance, an ingredient or something else? Is there any difference between barbecuing and grilling or are they basically the same?

Let us explain the basics here! When you grill, you use a relatively high temperature to prepare the food and you need a relatively short time to do it. On the other hand, you use a low temperature when you barbecue, and this way you will need a longer time to get the job done.

Another important distinction is about the amount of smoke the two activities produce: during grilling, there is not much smoke around, but smoke plays an important role in the barbecuing process and this way it gives the meat a special flavor. Now that we have made it clear what grilling and barbecuing really mean, let’s forget the first one and focus on BBQ!

What kind of apparatus should be used for barbecuing?

As you already know by now, you will need some equipment in order to create all that smoke that is needed for barbecuing. There are many different types of smokers available on the market, so you should know the basics before purchasing one, otherwise, you might end up with a smoker that is not the best fit for your needs. If you are not a pro yet and you are thinking about to begin this great hobby, our suggestion is to buy an electric smoker. Why?

Easy to handle

This is probably the most appealing characteristic for a beginner. If your starter smoker apparatus is a model you cannot handle without serious difficulties, it can ruin the fun and incline you to give up barbecuing for good. The simpler the better!

Temperature control

Contrary to other kinds of smokers, you do not need to control the temperature yourself: the Masterbuilt electric smoker will do it instead of you. There is no fire that you have to check all the time like with other types of smokers, therefore you don’t need to supervise the process and be around the machine all the time during barbecuing.

It is safe to use

Since an electric smoker does not work with wood and it does not use an open fire, there is no member being produced during barbecuing. For this reason, there is no fire risk.

Extra space

Although smaller models are also available, you can choose from some really spacious ones, which are ideal if you have a big family, a huge amount of friends who like hanging around at your place, of if you are planning to enter a BBQ competition in the future.
