The essence of Italian cuisine

What is the first thing that pops into your mind when you hear the following words: tomato, oregano, pasta, espresso, gelato, olive oil, pesto or prosciutto? Even if you are not so familiar with the world of cooking and the different kinds of cuisines, you probably know the answer: these ingredients are commonly used in Italian cuisine.

Moreover, you can probably mention at least four or five typical Italian dishes, such as pizza, pasta, lasagna, tiramisu or gelato. You can buy these meals in countless restaurants and supermarkets, but you can also prepare them in your own home. Not only are they cheaper this way, but they are often healthier as well, not to mention the fact that you can be proud of yourself if you can make some of these delicious meals yourself.

Are you inexperienced in the kitchen? Not a problem! We will introduce you two simple recipes, explaining step by step what you have to do in order to create some of the most popular Italian dishes


Pizza Margherita

Let’s start with everybody’s favorite, pizza! We have not met anyone who did not like it, so this recipe will probably be useful for everybody. We have chosen the most simple kind available: pizza Margherita. It is very easy to prepare, has a delicious taste and the best is that it can be developed further and can be used as a basic recipe for other kinds of pizza, too.

  • First, you can start preparing the dough.
  • Mix together 10 ounces flour with 5 ml instant yeast and 5 ml salt.
  • Mix in one small cup water and 15 ml olive oil, and when it is kneaded perfectly, put it aside.
  • Now you have time to make the sauce.
  • Stir together passata (strained tomato), basil and crushed garlic, and pour it to the top of the dough (roll it until it is very thin first).
  • Place the topping on the sauce: sliced tomato and mozzarella, plus some grated parmesan.
  • Bake the pizza in a preheated oven (around 230 °C) for 8-10 minutes.


If pizza is the favorite, then lasagna must be a close second due to its very typical Italian flavor. We have chosen a rich recipe that is still quite easy to make, although it takes more time than pizza.

  • You can start with cooking the sauce.
  • Take half kilogram sausage, 375-gram ground beef, 110 gram chopped the onion and some crushed garlic, and cook them until the meat turns brown.
  • Blend in 840 gram crushed tomato, 170-gram tomato paste, 170-gram tomato sauce and 118-ml water.
  • Add some spices like salt, pepper, basil, fennel, parsley and Italian spice mix. Cook it on low temperature for about one and half hours.
  • Cook lasagna noodles according to the instructions on the box and prepare the other sauce of 450-gram ricotta, one egg, salt, and parsley.
  • Layer the ingredients in a baking dish: meat sauce, noodles, and ricotta sauce cover the top with mozzarella and bake it for 25 minutes (190°C).
